A Break Up Note: With Certainty

You just think about what you've done, Certainty.
You just think about what you’ve done, Certainty.

Dear Certainty,

Sorry to do it this way, but it’s over.

We had our time, and it was good. You really strengthened me over the years. You gave me courage to say and do some pretty awesome things. Because of you, I–more or less–stayed out of trouble when I was young. You helped me in college, and that was nice. Because of you, I was never really unsure of where to go with my life. I really need to thank you for that.

But let’s be honest, Certainty, you’ve gotten me into a number of fights, too. read more »

The History of Rap ture

Oh, there's a video game, too? This just got real.
Oh, there’s a video game, too? This just got real.

“Ray! Their shoes, their socks, their clothes, everything was left behind! These people are gone!”

-Hattie Durham in Left Behind

Apparently there’s this movie coming out this weekend about the end times from a “Christian” perspective. I know this because a lot of people are blogging about how Rapture teachings are not biblical. Rather than arguing about the bibliosity™ of rapture teaching (the kind of teaching found in books and movies like “Left Behind,” “A Thief in the Night,” and “Late Great Planet Earth”), I thought I’d just make a timeline that shows how we got to thinking like this.* Enjoy!

. . .

years 27-37 ad:

A peasant, pedestrian, preacher, named Jesus, announces the Kingdom of God, is crucified and resurrected. Implications for the next life are established. (might as well start at the beginning.)

years 70-90ish:

“The Revelation” is written, the coming of Christ and the end of evil, in an apocalyptic style.

year 100:

Everybody starts predicting the date when Jesus will come back, even though Jesus basically said, “don’t bother.”

Some Stuff I’ve Learned from Performing Weddings

I found Candice and Heath's lack of faith... disturbing.
I found Candice and Heath’s lack of faith… disturbing.

So yes, yesterday Joanna and I celebrated 7 years of marriage, and I’ve got marriage on the brain! I love marriage, I’m not going to lie. I also love doing weddings. When you’ve worked a big beautiful downtown church, you kind of end up doing a lot of weddings. I’ve performed around 25 weddings, which is probably not a lot for the average pastor, but for me and my stage of the game, it’s a lot. So in my little journey, I’ve learned a few things.

     1. The rings only fit about 50% of the time on the wedding day. You get it. All eyes on you. Making the biggest commitment of your life. Your emotions are high. This is a big deal. And now your stinking little fingers are plumping up like microwaved hotdogs. So in many cases, the wedding rings don’t fit in that moment. This is a tip I got from another pastor. I always warn the couple at the wedding rehearsal, tell them to get the ring on as far as they can but not to force it or hurt each other. Most couples give it the old college try during the service, anyway. I’ve seen some pain. Don’t worry people. It’s not a bad omen. It’s just biology.  read more »

Atone for sins with the E-Scapegoat!

Hey, need to get something off your chest? Need to confess a sin and receive atonement, but you don’t have a priest or a goat? No problem! In preparation for Yom Kippur, tomorrow, you can lay your sins on the eScapegoat, and watch your sins leave the camp and head off into the wilderness (and off a cliff!) This is hilarious, and even a little educational. Enjoy!

Free Advent Bingo!

Hey everyone, I spent way too much time making this Advent Bingo set to not share it in the world! Throw in some M&M’s and prizes, this thing was a hit with teens and children. There’s 60 unique Advent Bingo Cards with only 34 different icons (so the games don’t last forever). I also made a little list for calling out the icons. I liked this better than some of the things you could pay for out there. Have fun!

Here’s the 60 game boards!

“Fight Church” MMA and Jesus

Whoa. Check out this trailer for a Documentary on a Church that hosts and teaches Mixed Martial Arts. “Fight Church.” *Spoiler Alert* He was Tyler Durden the whole time.

What are your thoughts? Is MMA incompatible with Christian living?

Here’s the Kickstarter page to get this movie finished.

Easter Commercial Bloopers

While I was in New York with our teenagers, you know, serving the poor and stuff, my church home showed the blooper real from our Easter commercial in the church services. Enjoy!
